What's Happening?


February and Early March Saturday Mornings 9am join volunteer staff for a guided walk through the Watson Trail on Big Pine Key to learn about the Pine Rocklands habitat and the rare and endangered species that live there. It's an easy hike along a groomed gravel trail. Takes about an hour. Dress for the weather, bring your water bottle and wear appropriate shoes.


Saturday, March 11th 5-7 pm Full Moon Kayak Excursion Big Pine Key This is an easy, relaxing, 2 hour paddle along the mangrove shoreline of No Name Key. Don't expect white water! This is one of our versions of Nature Therapy. You'll learn about the precious mangrove forest habitat, the birds, fishes and animals that live there. The highlight of the paddle tour  when you round the northern point of No Name Key, you get to watch the sun setting as the full moon rises. Sponsored by Big Pine Kayak Adventures, this is one of FAVOR's few fund raisers. You get to experience this incredible wildlife encounter for on $25 per person which includes kayak, gear, and experienced guide.  Call Captain Bill  305- 872-7474 to register.


March 11-18 2nd Annual Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Outdoor Fest  This year’s event will be even better than last! Eight days of wildlife excursions exploring different parts of the Refuges. Starting off the event is an outdoor and wildlife fair at Crocodile Lake NWR in Key Largo 9-2. Music, booths, food, silent auction, and kids activities to enlighten and entertain. The next three days will offer guided nature hikes, and more - all centered around the Key Largo refuge.  Wednesday March 15 through Friday March 17 will offer activities in the lower keys including bike rides, birding walks, and nature therapy. Saturday, March 18th starts off with a 5k run fundraiser – our Third Annual Run With Deer - followed by a Family Fun Saturday Fair with food, music, silent auction and hands-on activities and crafts for kids – of all ages.  It’s all mostly free but space is limited for some of the activities, so you’ll need to register on Eventbrite – available soon!


Saturday March 18th 8am Run With Deer 5K Race fundraiser – run through some of the trails on the National Key Deer Refuge – you may see an endangered Key Deer, a tiny marsh rabbit or any of the other species that are unique to our area. Race finish line is right where the outdoor fair begins – plan to stay a while! Online registration will be set up soon!


Saturday April 15 Earth Day 5K Race Key West   This 5K race is a favorite route for Key West runners. Starts at McCoy Indigenous Park at Atlantic and White Streets and runs our along the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a beautiful way to start the day – and help raise funds for FAVOR!! Online registration will be set up soon!

FREE National Key Deer Refuge Guided Walks/Bike Rides

Everyone is invited to join our guided National Key Deer Refuge trail walks and bike rides designed for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.  We meet at the National Key Deer Refuge Visitor's Center, located in the Winn Dixie shopping plaza on Big Pine Key.  From there, participants will be given maps to the starting site and caravan together. We leave promptly at 8:10 am so please plan to arrive early.  Each walk will end by 11:00 am.  Participants are encouraged to bring a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, water, binoculars, field guides, and dress appropriately for the weather.  A limited supply of loaner field guides and binoculars will be available for participants during each walk.  Feel free to ask for one if you don't have your own.  For more information, Call Kristie Killam @ the National Key Deer Visitor Center at 305-304-9625 or email [email protected]
